Trouble With Wilderness

To a lot of people, the wilderness is their sanctuary, a remedy of some sort, or an escape from reality. The wilderness is believed to be the only place where a society hasn't taken over; the only place free of civilization. In short, the wilderness is “untouched,” which is why it is thought that nature is the key to protecting the earth from humanity. Or is it? Is it possible that the land that holds so much of human ancient history, is a human creation itself? Is it possible that the wilderness is an outcome of human sophistication? An unpopular opinion is that nature has hypnotized us with its beauty. We don't want to see how unnatural the wilderness really is because if we made this realization, we would have to also realize our own uncontrollable mammal urges and impulses that we've suppressed over a long period of time...so we lie to ourselves. Is it foolish for us to think that the non-human world can help repair the damage society has done to human cultures? We may have to reexamine the wilderness as we know it, and start asking ourselves if nature itself is part of the bigger problem. Environmentalists will be the first people to argue this idea because it challenges their fundamental thought processes. To them, this is considered to be completely unorthodox thinking. This idea puts environmentalists principles and beliefs to the test.
