Hip-Hop is derived from oppressed African-American communities. As a white woman in the culture, where do I fit in? As a white woman in the culture, when should I listen rather than participate? As a white woman in the culture it is important to participate but not appropriate. The truth is I was invited into this culture, welcomed. And that is, in the end, the true essence of Hip-Hop. Inclusivity. “No one is bigger than the culture” (Kyle Clark). Allowing to be, together. “If there is anything we can all do together, it’s all celebrate together” (Kyle Clark). I think listening is huge. And I also think speaking up is huge. And it’s important when to know which one to do.
